The main goal of the BEST is to design and develop a medical device that can be entered into national and international competitions such as BMEIdea and BMEStart, hosted by the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) Amherst, Massachusetts, USA. The competition objectives, taken from the NCIIA website, summarize the expectations BEST has for its medical device design:
• Technical, economic and regulatory feasibility
• Contributes to human health and quality of life
• Technological innovation
• Potential for commercialization
The BEST will also seek to create awareness of biomedical engineering by organizing presentations by faculty who are interesting in sharing aspects of their research. We are excited by the rapid progress in the biomedical field and feel that one of the best ways to promote this team, the biomedical program at UVic, and the research of our faculty, is to give the public a glimpse of what is happening on the cutting edge of biomedical research and development.
